Natural Resources Management

Minerals and metals are essential for modern societies. They play a vital role in the transition to a low-carbon economy that is required to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Catalyste+ has been working in Natural Resources Governance and Management in Canada and internationally for a number of years. Our goal is to help partners better manage resources to secure greater economic, social and environmental benefits.

Program Focus

Natural Resources Management is an integral part of our work in Canada with Indigenous and Northern Services, and internationally, specifically in our two completed programs Strengthening the Ministry of Mines (SUMM) in Ethiopia and MERIT in Mongolia.

Our work in the natural resource management sector has a three-pronged approach of developing bilateral program opportunities, working with Indigenous governments and partners in Canada, and delivering (small and medium) strategic projects that can be scaled up to create opportunities for larger programs.

We deliver technical assistance to strengthen the institutional and management capacity of governments, civil society organizations and private sector partners. We work towards ensuring that the extraction of minerals and metals benefits all stakeholders, rights holders and leads to sustainable development.

Key Objectives

Our key objectives for working in the Natural Resources Management (NRM) sector are:

Objective 1: To work with local (impacted) communities to improve their awareness and engagement in decision-making around NRM, including economic, social, and environmental conditions.

Objective 2: Public Administration Strengthening in NRM regions through promoting the transparent, inclusive, accountable, and sustainable management of minerals and metals resources.

Objective 3: To support the development of effective management and good governance practices of private, not-for-profit and community organizations such that they are better equipped to participate and equitably benefit from the mineral extraction occurring in their regions

Objective 4: To raise awareness and advocate for responsible mining practices and sustainable development in NRM regions.

Our Focus Pillars

Our Natural Resources Management programs and services are focused on six core pillars.

Working with local communities to improve their economic, social, and environmental conditions through programs that promote job creation, environmental sustainability and community development.

This includes supporting the implementation of transparent and accountable processes and systems as such they can participate and benefit from the mineral resources sector.

Developing and implementing world-class training and field manuals in water management, mine reclamation and closure to promote responsible mining practices and the care of ecosystems.

Focused on understanding the different impacts the sector has on gender, the contribution of women in mining and on promoting greater gender equality.

Raise awareness about the opportunities and challenges associated with mineral extraction, promote and advocate for responsible mining practices and sustainable development.
