CESO Supports Canada’s Global Response to COVID-19

CESO Supports Canada’s Global Response to COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global threat that does not recognize borders and can only be overcome through coordinated action all around the world.

Alongside the Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC) and over 180 other organizations, CESO has signed its support to an open letter addressed to the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of International Development, calling for international cooperation to be a part of Canada’s COVID-19 response.

The Government of Canada’s commitment to global co-operation to address the pandemic, including the allocation of $159.5M through Canada’s International Assistance Envelope, is an important first step.

For many people in vulnerable countries around the world, the pandemic may have significant and lasting negative impacts on their health, prosperity and opportunities. The letter proposes further measures to help in the global fight against the pandemic through an increase in Official Development Assistance (ODA) as well as the fast-tracking of funding renewals for multi-year international programs, among other proposals.

Like all sectors of the Canadian economy, Canadian aid organizations are coping with the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, while also working hard to ensure critical front-line services continue for the most vulnerable populations around the globe.

CESO looks forward to continuing to support CCIC and the federal government to advance global efforts to address and contain COVID-19.
