Setting the Foundation to Build a Healthy, Self-Sufficient Community

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is an elected community government focused on responsibly managing their own community development in areas such as infrastructure, health and social services, and economic development. The Council has been working with CESO for several years to build the capacity of its leaders and staff to develop and implement long-term community development strategies.

Last year, the community’s department of health needed assistance in creating a multi-year strategic plan to address the health and social service needs of its residents. CESO worked with the department to provide advisory services to facilitate creating a five-year strategic plan. The plan addresses the priorities of the community to provide its residents with accessible health care and social services based on the community’s values and traditions.

The department now has access to the strategic plan, which will inform their long-term decisions to build a healthy, self-sufficient community.
