CESO Volunteer Advisor and MenteePreparing for a volunteer assignment can be a daunting experience. Whether you are preparing for your first assignment or fifth, each experience will be different; different assignment purpose, different client and different country.  While CESO program staff and recruiters do everything to ensure you are ready for your assignment, there are some things you can do to feel prepared.

Here are seven tips to prepare yourself for your next CESO assignment

  • Connect with the client before leaving for your assignment.  It is important that both you and the client understand what is required for the assignment, and that your work plan, with a detailed outline of the goals and objectives, is complete.
  • Research the country you are visiting.  In addition to the documents that our program staff provide to you, you may find it helpful to do your own research or speak with an LVA or other VAs who have experience working in the country you are visiting.
  • Leave all your contact information with a family member or friend, just in case of an emergency.
  • Make sure you place your medical emergency assistant card that we provide to you in a safe place.
  • Read your travel itinerary carefully and arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight is scheduled to leave.
  • Remember to register with the Canadian Consulate: http://travel.gc.ca/travelling/registration
  • If you are not sure of something, please don’t hesitate to contact our Program Coordinators or myself at jrovet@ceso-saco.com.  No question is a bad question!
